Sheringham Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this proper woodland just outside Sheringham. The forest feels older and wilder than many Norfolk woods, with thick canopy that filters the light into green-gold patches on the forest floor.

Dog walkers and families with older children will get the most from an hour or two here. The paths aren't pushchair-friendly - too many roots and muddy patches - but that's part of its appeal. Little ones might find it a bit dull unless they're into spotting squirrels and collecting conkers.

What makes Sheringham Wood worth the detour is how quiet it stays, even in summer when the coast gets mad busy. The birdsong is brilliant, and you'll often have whole sections to yourself. Bring wellies if it's been wet - the clay soil holds water something fierce.

From Woodlands Caravan Park you can walk here in ten minutes, making it perfect for an early morning escape before the beach crowds arrive. Kelling Heath Holiday Park and Beeston Regis Holiday Park are close enough for a proper woodland walk too. The tracks eventually connect to footpaths heading towards Upper Sheringham if you fancy extending the walk, though most visitors turn back after reaching the clearing with the old oak that's easily 400 years old.
