Shipperton Burn

The burn itself is modest - a small freshwater lake near Chathill that doesn't announce itself loudly or draw crowds by the coachload. That's rather the point. It's the sort of place you stumble upon while exploring the Northumberland coast, and it rewards that casual discovery with a genuinely peaceful hour or so.

You can walk around it, which takes the better part of an hour at an easy pace. The water's calm, the surroundings are low-key farmland and woodland, and there's something restorative about that lack of fuss. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but it's proper lovely on a clear day. The light hits the water differently depending on the time of day, and if you're lucky you might spot waterfowl.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable - nothing treacherous, no steep drops - though they might get restless if expecting a full afternoon's entertainment. Walkers and anyone after a quiet spot to sit and think will get more from it. There's a real difference between somewhere busy and somewhere genuinely undisturbed.

If you're based at one of the nearby sites like Beadnell Bay or Westfield Paddock, it's worth the short drive as a morning or late-afternoon outing. Pair it with a wander through Chathill village or a trip to the coast at Beadnell - only a few miles away - and you've got a decent day mapped out. Free to visit, no facilities that I can see, and no need to book ahead. Go early to avoid the rare chance of bumping into others.
