Shirehall Moor

The moorland around Shirehall spreads wide and open, the sort of Cornish landscape that makes you understand why people move here and never leave. It's proper wild - heather, gorse, and rough grassland rolling toward distant views, with hardly a fence in sight. You're looking at genuine upland habitat, the kind of space that takes your breath away on a clear day and feels properly exposed when the weather turns.

What you actually get here is walking. Miles of it, across open ground with few defined paths - which is either liberating or slightly anxiety-inducing depending on your confidence with a compass. The reserve is managed for wildlife: adders sunbathe on the rocks, skylarks sing overhead, and if you're lucky you'll spot a hen harrier working the thermals. Birdwatchers absolutely live for this place. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're genuinely into spotting birds or exploring rocky outcrops.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no facilities to speak of. Free to roam, which is how moorland should be. Give yourself at least two hours if you want to properly explore rather than just having a quick wander. The Camping Field sits just 3.7 miles away near Bodmin, making this a genuine option for a proper outdoors-focused camping trip. Mena Farm and Tremeer Farm glamping are also nearby if you want something softer underfoot but still want access to proper wild country. Come in spring or early summer when the wildlife is active and the light's golden until late.
