Shitterton Wood

The name alone tends to raise eyebrows, but Shitterton Wood near Wareham is a genuine spot worth a proper walk. It's dense Dorset woodland - the sort where you lose mobile signal and remember why people used to fear forests. Beech and oak dominate, with patches of holly and bracken underfoot, and it's genuinely quiet in a way that feels increasingly rare.

This is walker territory, no question about it. There's nothing flashy here - no visitor centre, no themed routes, just footpaths that wind through the trees and occasional clearings where light actually reaches the ground. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do a decent loop without rushing. The woodland floor gets muddy after rain, so proper boots are essential rather than optional.

Families with older kids who can manage uneven terrain will find it absorbing for an hour or so, though younger ones might flag without waymarked trails to follow. Serious walkers and nature types get far more from it - the bird life is decent, and in autumn the fungi makes regular appearance.

It's free to access and open year-round, though winter can be thick and uninviting. Spring and early summer hit the sweet spot. If you're based at Wareham Forest Tourist Park just down the road, it's an easy morning sortie that feels properly removed from the holiday park vibe. Not spectacular, but genuinely useful if you want actual woodland rather than a manicured forest trail.
