Shoot's Delf Wood

Deep in the Lancashire countryside near Skelmersdale, Shoot's Delf Wood is a proper slice of ancient woodland that feels like stepping back in time. This isn't a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and car parks - it's the real deal, the kind of place where the trees have been doing their thing for centuries and you're just passing through.

The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric, with mature hardwoods creating a cathedral-like canopy overhead. Walking through here in autumn is particularly atmospheric when the light filters through russet and gold leaves. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, and if you're lucky you'll spot woodland birds and perhaps even deer if you're quiet enough.

This works brilliantly for woodland walkers and anyone after a proper forest experience without the crowds. Families with older kids will enjoy it too, though younger children might find the uneven paths a bit challenging. Budget a couple of hours to really soak in the atmosphere rather than rushing through.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of - it's a proper working woodland you can access freely. The nearest accommodation option is The Secret Garden Glamping about four miles away, which would make a lovely base for exploring the area. Come in spring for bluebells or autumn for the colours, but honestly, any season works if you don't mind a bit of mud on your boots.
