Singleton Maize Maze

A maize maze near Preston that changes its design each season - you're given a map and left to work out the route through towering stalks of corn. It's the sort of thing that sounds daft until you're actually in there and genuinely turned around, which happens faster than you'd think.

Families with kids aged five to twelve will get the most from it. Younger children find the height of the maze genuinely thrilling, and there's something about being temporarily lost in a field that appeals to that age group in a way a regular attraction doesn't. Teenagers tend to lose interest once they've solved it in ten minutes. Adults without kids might find twenty minutes enough.

The whole experience usually takes forty minutes to an hour depending on how quickly you crack the puzzle and whether you take wrong turns deliberately. It's free or paid entry - details weren't available when we checked, so ring ahead or check their social media before heading over from Preston.

Timing matters. Go early autumn when the corn is properly tall and the weather's still decent. Summer heat can make it uncomfortable, and by October the mazes start looking a bit ragged. It works well as part of a wider countryside visit if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around Mowbreck or Rawcliffe Hall - less than five miles away - but honestly, it's a thirty-minute diversion rather than a destination in itself. Decent enough for a morning slot during a park holiday, especially if the kids have cabin fever.
