Sir John's Plantation

You'll find yourself walking among ancient woodland just outside Beverley, where Sir John's Plantation feels properly removed from the world despite being minutes from town. The forest floor is soft underfoot, paths wind through mature trees, and there's a real sense of stepping back - not in terms of history, but in terms of peace and quiet.

It's a straightforward walk rather than a destination with attractions or facilities. Bring decent footwear because the ground can be boggy after rain, and don't expect signage or visitor infrastructure. What you get instead is genuine woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. Dog walkers love it. Families with primary school-aged children will manage fine for an hour, though teenagers might find it a bit dull without a proper trail map or story attached to it.

The plantation works best as part of a bigger day out around Beverley rather than a standalone visit. Cherry Burton Leisure Park sits just 2.8 miles away, making this an easy walk from a base there, or pair it with a mooch around Beverley's Georgian town centre and the Minster. Butt Farm, 6 miles out, also puts you within reasonable striking distance if you're after a quieter camping experience.

Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light filtering through the canopy. There's nothing touristy about it, which is precisely the point.
