Site of Bangor Castle

Stone foundations scattered across a grassy field mark all that remains of this medieval stronghold, built by the Welsh princes before Edward I's conquest swept it away. The site sits on elevated ground overlooking the Menai Strait, giving you a proper sense of why they chose this spot - commanding views across to the mainland and natural defences on three sides.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the significance more than casual visitors. This was Llywelyn ap Gruffudd's power base before the English arrived with their own grand designs for Beaumaris Castle down the road. Walking among the low walls, you need a fair bit of imagination to picture the great hall and towers that once stood here.

The remains themselves are fairly modest - don't expect towering ruins or dramatic gateways. What you get is a peaceful spot for a short wander, particularly appealing if you're already exploring Beaumaris and its famous castle. The walk takes maybe twenty minutes if you're having a proper look around.

Families staying at nearby parks like Tros Y Waen or Kingsbridge won't find enough here to occupy restless children for long, but it makes a decent pit stop between Beaumaris and other Anglesey attractions. Best combined with the town's medieval streets and Edward I's unfinished fortress rather than treated as a destination in its own right.
