Site of old Lime Kilns

The old lime kilns near Sidmouth are a proper bit of industrial archaeology - nothing fancy, but genuinely interesting if you're into that sort of thing. You're looking at the weathered remains of what was once a thriving lime-burning operation, the kind of place that would have been belching smoke and heat back in the day. The kilns themselves still stand, though they're quieter now, and you can see how the work was done, where the limestone went in, where the heat came from.

It's the sort of stop that works best for walkers and history types rather than young kids expecting theme park thrills. The actual site won't keep you more than thirty minutes unless you're genuinely fascinated by Victorian industrial processes - but it does paint a vivid picture of how this coastline used to work for a living. The walk to get there is often better than the destination itself, which sounds harsh but is genuinely true.

If you're based at Oakdown or Beer Head just down the road, it's a decent half-hour detour on a coastal ramble. Ladram Bay is a bit further out but still within reasonable striking distance for a morning's exploring. These kilns sit awkwardly between proper tourist attractions and local curiosity - worth knowing about, but don't rearrange your whole holiday around it. The cliffs round Sidmouth are far more compelling, and the town itself has enough charm to fill an afternoon.
