Sittingbourne Viaduct SKLR Railway Station

The railway viaduct at Sittingbourne dominates the skyline like a Victorian engineering statement nobody's bothered to argue with. Built in the 1860s, this brick and iron structure carries trains over the Swale Valley with a grandeur that feels almost defiant - you can see why the Victorians wanted to show off a bit.

It's not a destination you'd trek here for alone, but if you're passing through Kent or staying near Sheerness, it's worth a five-minute stop. The viaduct is best photographed from the road below or the station forecourt itself, where you get a proper sense of scale. The arches are genuinely impressive - all red brick and industrial romance, the kind of thing that reminds you railways were once the cutting edge of technology.

The nearby Painters Farm Camping Site gives you a base within easy reach if you're doing a wider Kent trip. You could combine this with other local attractions reasonably easily from there. The station itself is still operating, so there's activity - the odd train passing overhead adds to the atmosphere rather than detracting from it.

It's free to view and takes ten minutes maximum, really. Families with kids interested in railways or Victorian engineering will appreciate it more than most. History enthusiasts might spend a bit longer examining the brickwork and construction details. Not worth a dedicated day trip from London, but if you're in the area, the viaduct deserves a look.
