Six Gates Wood

A proper woodland walk near Lingfield, Six Gates Wood offers the kind of dense forest you don't often find in this corner of Sussex. The trees here are tall enough to shut out the sky, and in winter especially, it's genuinely atmospheric - the sort of place where you half expect to stumble across something from a fairy tale.

You're walking through mixed woodland, mostly deciduous, which means it changes completely between seasons. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Summer can feel claustrophobic with all that growth. Autumn is probably best - clearer sightlines and that proper forest-floor crunch underfoot.

There's no obvious visitor infrastructure, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood. Bring a map. The paths are reasonably clear but you can lose your bearings quickly if you're not paying attention. This isn't a manicured country estate walk - it's proper woodland.

Families with older kids will find it worthwhile. Younger ones might struggle with the lack of designated trails and facilities. Serious walkers and anyone who just wants to disappear into the trees for an hour should make it a stop.

It works well alongside Hook Farm Campsite just down the road - a decent base for exploring the area. Allow a solid hour or two depending on how much you want to wander. No facilities that I can see, so sort yourself out before you arrive.
