Skeleton Cave

Getting to this cave requires a proper scramble up the limestone cliffs above Llandudno Bay, but the effort pays off with spectacular coastal views along the way. The cave itself is essentially a large natural opening in the rock face, named rather dramatically after human remains found here during Victorian excavations. Don't expect guided tours or gift shops - this is raw adventure territory where you'll need a torch and sensible footwear.

Families with older children who enjoy exploring will love the sense of discovery, though it's definitely not suitable for pushchairs or nervous climbers. The cave opening is impressive enough, but the real draw is the coastal walk that brings you here, with sweeping views across to Anglesey on clear days.

Allow a good couple of hours for the round trip from Llandudno, including time to poke about and admire the scenery. Spring through autumn offers the best conditions, as winter can make the cliff paths treacherous. It's free to explore, naturally, though parking in Llandudno might cost you a few pounds.

This makes an excellent half-day adventure if you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Conwy like Lyons Pendyffryn Hall or Aberconwy Resort. Just the thing for working up an appetite before heading back to base for a proper meal.
