Skelmorlie Secret Bunker Museum

Tucked into a hillside near Dunoon, this Cold War bunker is the real deal - a functional command centre built in the 1960s to house Scottish civil defence operations if nuclear war kicked off. You descend into the thing and suddenly you're in a time capsule, complete with period switchboards, maps, original furniture, and enough paranoia embedded in the architecture to make your skin prickle.

It's properly fascinating if you've got any interest in Cold War history or just how Britain prepared (or didn't) for apocalypse. The guides know their stuff and aren't afraid to say outright how futile most of it would have been. Allow two hours minimum - it's cramped and you'll want to read the displays rather than rush through.

Families with older kids who can handle slightly unsettling content will find it gripping. Young children might just find it boring and dark. Solo history types and Cold War buffs will love this without question.

Open weekends only April through September, 9am to 6pm. Free admission, though donations are encouraged. It's a short drive from Dunoon, making it an easy addition to a broader Argyll trip. If you're staying at Beach House Pods nearby, it's worth combining with a walk along the coast - the bunker itself is underground so weather won't stop you, but the surrounding landscape is lovely.
