Skipsea Castle

What remains of Skipsea Castle amounts to little more than grassy earthworks and partial foundations, but that's precisely what makes this spot intriguing for castle enthusiasts. Built in the 11th century by Drogo de la Beuvrière, one of William the Conqueror's companions, it once dominated this stretch of Yorkshire coastline before gradually succumbing to coastal erosion.

The castle's dramatic demise makes for a compelling story - much of the original structure has literally fallen into the sea over the centuries. Walking the surviving earthworks, you can still make out the bailey and motte, though imagination is required to picture the timber and stone fortress that once stood here.

History buffs will find plenty to ponder, especially given the castle's connection to medieval power struggles and its role in controlling the coast near Driffield. Families might find the bare remains less engaging than more substantial ruins, though the short walk and sea views add appeal.

Access appears to be free, and you'll likely have the place largely to yourself. Allow about 30 minutes for a proper look around, perhaps combining it with a coastal walk.
