Slack Plantation

The walk into Slack Plantation takes you straight into proper Yorkshire woodland - tall conifers mixed with older broadleaves, the kind of forest floor that's soft underfoot even in dry weather. It's tucked just outside Wakefield, which makes it an easy escape from the town without feeling like you've driven halfway across the country.

You're looking at a decent stretch of forest trails here, nothing too demanding but enough to keep you occupied for a couple of hours if you're thorough. The plantation itself is industrial in origin - you can tell by the regimented rows of trees - but it's matured into somewhere genuinely pleasant to wander. Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those after a straightforward afternoon ramble without elevation drama.

It's free to access, which is always welcome. The trails are reasonably well-maintained, though nothing fancy. Bring proper shoes rather than trainers; the forest floor gets boggy in patches even when it hasn't rained recently. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull - there's no playground or visitor centre - but older children who enjoy being in the woods will be content enough.

Early autumn is lovely here - the light filters through differently, and there are far fewer midges than summer.
