Slade Wood

You'll find yourself walking into proper ancient woodland here, the kind where the canopy gets so thick you lose track of time. Slade Wood sits just outside Robertsbridge and feels worlds away from the roads that surround it - once you're in, the noise drops right off.

The trees dominate everything. Oak, beech, and ash mostly, with a forest floor that's thick with moss and fallen branches even in summer. There are tracks running through, though nothing formally maintained that I could see, so wear decent boots and don't expect signposting. Local dog walkers know it well, and you'll spot the occasional family with kids picking around the undergrowth looking for insects or sticks.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of place to spend an hour or two rather than drop in for fifteen minutes - you need time to actually feel the wood rather than just rush through it. Summer's lovely, but honestly, visit in autumn when the light gets lower and the leaves turn orange. You'll see far more of the actual woodland structure then.

If you're staying at Wood View Farm Glamping down the road, this makes a proper morning walk without needing the car. The glamping site's only five miles away, so you're close enough to head here with a flask and do some proper exploring before heading back for lunch. Free access as far as I can tell, no facilities to speak of - come prepared.
