Slate Henge

You'll find Slate Henge on Bodmin Moor, a rather striking stack of slate slabs arranged in a circle that looks deliberately monumental - though whether it's ancient or contemporary art remains delightfully unclear. It's the sort of thing that stops you mid-walk and makes you pull out your phone, despite the dodgy signal out here.

The viewpoint itself commands proper views across the moor, and on a clear day you can see for miles. It's not Stonehenge, and it doesn't pretend to be, which is rather the point. What you get is a quirky waypoint that breaks up a longer moorland walk perfectly. The slate formation photographs well - that's half the appeal - but there's also something oddly meditative about standing here with the wind whipping across the heather.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination on its own; you're coming here as part of a bigger ramble across the moor rather than driving specially. Access is free, and there's no formal opening hours since you're outdoors on public moorland. Allow thirty minutes to an hour if you're combining it with other walks in the area.

If you're based at Rosebud Farm or Camp De Lank, both just outside Bodmin, this fits neatly into a morning's exploration. The moor itself is the real draw - Slate Henge is simply a good reason to get out here in the first place. Go when the light's decent; the moor can be grim in drizzle.
