Sledmere House & Gardens

The drive up to Sledmere House feels properly grand - a long tree-lined avenue that suddenly opens onto a cream-coloured mansion sitting proud on the Yorkshire Wolds. This is a working stately home, not a museum piece, and there's something refreshing about that.

Inside, the rooms are genuinely impressive without being stuffy. The library alone justifies the visit - soaring ceilings, thousands of volumes, and the sort of light that makes you want to linger for hours. The decoration throughout is bold and confident, from the Chinese wallpapers to the Chippendale furniture. It's clear the owners have proper taste rather than just deep pockets.

The gardens are the real surprise. They're not the manicured show-gardens you'd expect - instead they sprawl generously across the grounds with working kitchen gardens, woodland walks, and enough space that you won't feel crowded even on busy days. Allow a solid afternoon if you're going to do justice to both house and grounds.

Families with younger kids might find the house itself a bit dry - it's not interactive or child-focused - but anyone over twelve who's interested in architecture, gardens, or how the landed gentry actually lived will find plenty to engage with. History buffs especially should block out extra time.

It sits well within reach of Malton for those basing themselves at Yorkshire Wolds Glamping or the other excellent sites dotted around the area. The Wolds landscape around here is genuinely lovely, and Sledmere gives you good reason to explore properly.
