Sliddens Moss

The walk up Sliddens Moss from Greenfield is a straightforward moorland climb that rewards you with proper views across the South Pennines. It's not dramatic - no jagged ridges or sudden drop-offs - but on a clear day you'll see right across Lancashire and into Cheshire. The terrain is typical upland stuff: boggy in places, heathery in others, with a decent path that most people manage without fuss.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. If you're after dramatic peaks or Instagram-ready summits, look elsewhere. But if you want a no-nonsense moorland tramp that takes a couple of hours round trip, it delivers. There's something calming about these landscape - just you, the hills, and the wind. Children might find the exposed moorland a bit dull unless they're already keen walkers; the top itself isn't particularly exciting as a destination.

The nearest base is Greenfield, a small village on the edge of the South Pennines that's handily placed for exploring this part of Lancashire. Stay at Dovestone Holiday Park or Whitegate Leisure if you want proper facilities - both are within four miles and highly rated. Secret Valley Escapes is slightly further but worth considering if you prefer something quieter.

Go on a day when the weather's decent. Low cloud kills the views entirely, and the moor becomes genuinely grim. Spring through to early autumn is best. Admission is free, and you can start the walk from various points around Greenfield depending on your energy levels.
