Smardale Gill Viaduct

The railway viaduct at Smardale Gill is a proper Victorian engineering statement. Built in 1875 for a branch line that's long since closed, this red sandstone structure spans a deep wooded ravine just outside Appleby-in-Westmorland with an almost brutal confidence.

You approach it on foot - there's a decent riverside walk from the village that takes you down through Smardale Wood. The viaduct looms suddenly through the trees. Up close it's genuinely impressive: twelve arches, each one a careful bit of brickwork, and high enough that standing underneath feels properly vertiginous. The stonework has weathered to that warm orange-red you see right across the North West.

It's free to visit and takes maybe thirty minutes including the walk down and a proper look around. The ravine itself is worth the trip - beck running through it, trees closing in, all quite atmospheric. You can walk across the top if you're not afraid of heights, though the path is a bit boggy in places.

Historically minded walkers will get the most from this. Kids might enjoy the walk and the novelty of standing under something that massive, but don't expect a day's entertainment. Go mid-week if you can. Weekends bring the Wainwright-guided-walk crowd and the spot loses its quiet dignity.
