Smuggler's Cave

Down a rocky scramble from Conwy's seafront lies a cave that's been exciting local kids for generations - though you'll need to time your visit carefully with the tides. The entrance sits at the base of the town walls, accessible only when the water's out, giving this coastal grotto its air of adventure.

Legend has it smugglers once used this natural hollow to stash their contraband away from the excise men, though the cave itself is fairly modest. It's really just a shallow recess in the limestone, but the thrill of exploring somewhere that feels genuinely off the beaten track makes up for any lack of dramatic stalactites. Kids absolutely love the treasure-hunting atmosphere.

Families staying at places like Hafan y Gogarth or Lyons Pendyffryn Hall will find this makes a cracking addition to a day exploring Conwy's medieval walls and castle. The walk down takes five minutes from the town centre, but check tide times first - you don't want to get cut off.
