Snapes Wood

Walk into Snapes Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper Yorkshire woodland - tall trees, dappled light, the whole works. It's a genuine forest rather than a managed park, so expect roots underfoot, muddy patches after rain, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually hear the birds. The woodland is dense enough that you lose sight of civilisation within minutes, which feels like a minor miracle given you're only a few miles from York.

This is one for people who want a proper forest walk without faffing about on marked trails or worrying about pushchairs. Families with capable walkers will have a good time; very small children might struggle with the uneven ground. Dog walkers absolutely love it - plenty of space to let them off lead and chase rabbits. History types won't find much here, but naturalists and photographers shoot plenty of good material among the trees.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to explore properly, though you can do a shorter loop in under an hour. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring water and wear decent boots. Best visited in autumn when the canopy thins out and you can actually see through the wood, or spring when the light's forgiving.
