Soil Henge

You won't find crowds at Soil Henge, and that's rather the point. This Bronze Age earthwork sits on the moors above Bradford, a low-lying bank of soil arranged in a rough circle - nothing like its famous Wiltshire cousin, but genuinely mysterious in its own right. The site is open to the elements year-round, free to visit, though honestly it demands a fair bit of imagination to appreciate what you're looking at.

The real appeal here is the walk itself. You'll need proper boots and a decent map - it's not waymarked brilliantly - but once you're up on those moorland ridges, the views across West Yorkshire are something special. Archaeologists reckon it's around 3,500 years old, which stops you in your tracks when you're standing there.

History enthusiasts will get a kick out of it, and serious walkers certainly won't mind the trek from Bradford. Casual visitors might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're into Bronze Age monuments - you're not going to spend hours here. Allow 90 minutes if you're including the walk, maybe two if you're taking photos.

Stay at Bronte Country Park or Hebden Bridge's caravan site and you've got proper moorland country on your doorstep. Combine it with other Peak District walks and you've got a weekend. Just don't expect Stonehenge.
