Somerset Space Walk - Saturn

You won't find Saturn hanging in the sky above Taunton, but you will find it here - part of Somerset's Space Walk, a gallery installation that maps our solar system across the landscape. It's an odd thing, genuinely, the kind of project that makes you either love Somerset or wonder what on earth the county's planning committee was thinking.

The walk itself is spread out, so you're not just popping into a building and browsing for twenty minutes. You're actually moving between different points, each representing a planet, with Saturn being one of the major stops. The scale of it is the whole point - trying to get your head around space by walking it out in real Somerset countryside, which is either brilliant or bewildering depending on your mood.

Historically minded types and anyone with a passing interest in astronomy will get something from it. Kids do okay if they like spotting things and walking, though younger ones might lose interest once they realise there's no actual planets to touch. Families staying at Secret Valley or Thornhills Holiday Park nearby could make it a half-day activity - it's close enough not to eat up your whole afternoon, but far enough that you can't just wander over between breakfast and lunch.

Bringing proper footwear matters. The Somerset Levels aren't dramatic, but they can be damp. Check what's actually running before you go - these sorts of installations can be patchy about opening hours and maintenance.
