South Park

South Park sits just outside Oxford and delivers proper woodland walking without the tourist crush of the city centre. It's a nature reserve where you can actually hear yourself think - proper old-growth trees, open grassland, and the kind of paths that feel like they belong to locals rather than tour groups.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. The trails meander through mixed woodland and open areas, and it's the sort of place where you might spot deer if you're lucky, though honestly the appeal is more about having space to breathe than ticking off wildlife spotting boxes. The reserve is well-maintained and accessible enough for families with younger kids, though it's not a destination for pram pushers - uneven ground and tree roots mean you'll want proper footwear.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper loop, or 45 minutes if you just want a quick leg-stretch. It works brilliantly as a morning's activity before heading into Oxford itself, or a wind-down after a day of colleges and museums. The nearest holiday parks - Cedar Hollow and The Oaks are barely a couple of miles away, which makes South Park ideal for breaking up a park holiday. You won't find crowds here, which is both the draw and the reality: it's understated, unfussy, and exactly what a local nature reserve should be. Best visited mid-week when Oxford day-trippers are elsewhere.
