South Plantation

The woodland at South Plantation spreads across a proper swathe of Northumberland just outside Morpeth, offering the kind of quiet forest walk you can actually breathe in. It's not a manicured country estate - it's real forest floor stuff, the sort of place where you can lose an hour without noticing because you're too busy spotting what's growing overhead and underfoot.

The trees here are tall enough to make you feel small, which is precisely the point. There are paths through the plantation that suit most abilities, though they can get muddy after rain so come prepared. You won't find visitor centres or cafes, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on what you're after. If you want woodland without the crowds or the facilities, this is it.

Walkers will get the most from South Plantation. It's not a destination you'd drag reluctant kids to for a full day - they'll be bored after forty minutes or so - but for a family based at Tranwell Farm Holidays nearby, it's a useful pocket of nature to stretch your legs in. The proximity to Morpeth means you can make this part of a broader ramble through the area.

Timing-wise, two hours maximum unless you're genuinely keen on identifying every species. Spring's excellent if you want to see the woodland floor come alive. Admission details are thin on the ground, but most forestry areas like this offer free access. Worth the detour if you're in the region and fancy some proper woodland air.
