South Wood

The woodland around South Wood, just outside Truro, is the sort of place you wander into without much expectation and leave feeling properly restored. It's not dramatic - no gorges, no waterfalls, no Instagram moments - just mature mixed woodland with decent paths that wind through shade and dappled light. The trees are old enough to feel established, the undergrowth manageable enough that you can actually walk without battling brambles.

This works best for families wanting a gentle outing or anyone based at Trethem Mill or Carnon Downs needing an easy woodland leg-stretch. It's the kind of spot where kids might actually notice things - moss on tree trunks, bird calls, maybe a bit of wildlife - without feeling forced into educational mode. Walkers won't be challenged, but that's rather the point. An hour is plenty, longer if you're the dawdling type.

Free access appears standard for Cornish woodland, though it's worth confirming when you visit. Seasonally, spring when the canopy's freshening up is probably best, though autumn has its own appeal with the light shift.
