Southburn Archeological Museum

The museum sits in Southburn, a few miles outside Driffield, and focuses on finds from Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement in the area. It's a small operation - the kind of place you can cover properly in an hour or so without feeling rushed. What you get is a genuine local collection rather than polished blockbuster exhibits, which means the artefacts speak louder than the presentation.

The Roman material is the real draw here. Pottery shards, coins, bits of everyday kit that give you a proper sense of what life looked like when this corner of Yorkshire was under Roman rule. There's Anglo-Saxon stuff too, which is less flashy but arguably more interesting if you're into the darker early medieval period. You won't find the showpiece treasures that the bigger museums guard, but that's partly the appeal - it feels less curated, more honest.

This works brilliantly if you're a history head spending a few days in the area rather than as a standalone destination. Pair it with walking around Driffield itself, which has some decent Georgian architecture, and you've got a solid afternoon. If you're camping at East End Farm Campsite nearby, it's an easy detour on a day when the weather isn't playing ball. Family groups with primary-age kids interested in archaeology might find it engaging, but teenagers and casual visitors could feel it's a bit thin for the effort unless local history really grabs them. Check opening hours before you go - rural museums can be temperamental about visitors.
