Southernmost Point of Kent

The southern edge of Kent is marked by a rather unremarkable spot near Dungeness, a few miles south of New Romney. It's not a formal visitor attraction with plaques or facilities - more a geographical fact that appeals to the sort of person who likes ticking off extreme points on a map. You'll find yourself on or near the coast, depending on which specific longitude and latitude you're chasing, and honestly, the landscape does the talking better than any sign ever could.

Dungeness itself dominates the view - that vast shingle peninsula with its nuclear power station and working lighthouse creating an almost post-industrial backdrop. It's bleak in a compelling way, properly windswept and exposed. The pebble beaches stretch endlessly, and if you're into birdwatching or landscape photography, there's genuine appeal here. Families with restless kids might find it underwhelming; there's no shop, no shelter, and the shingle gets uncomfortable underfoot quickly.

The real draw is the walk itself and the sense of reaching somewhere definitive. Allow 30 minutes to an hour depending on your fitness and how deep into the shingle you venture. It's free, obviously - it's just land and sea. Best visited outside summer weekends when the coast attracts crowds heading for the beaches near New Romney.

Parked at Herons Park Campsite or Parkdean Resorts Romney Sands, you're perfectly placed for a morning amble down to the southernmost point. Combine it with a proper walk around Dungeness or a trip inland to the Romney Marsh if you want more to do.
