Southgrove Copse

Walk into Southgrove Copse and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy does most of the talking. It's a small forest tucked into the Wiltshire landscape near Pewsey, nothing enormous, but dense enough that you feel properly away from things within minutes.

The paths wind through beech and oak with that soft floor of leaves and moss underfoot. Come in spring and the bluebells are thick; autumn turns the whole place amber and rust. It's straightforward walking territory - no dramatic elevation or technical bits, just genuine woodland pace where you can actually hear yourself think.

This works well for families who don't need climbing frames and elaborate facilities. Kids either love the freedom of trees or they don't, and Southgrove makes that clear fast - probably two hours maximum before you've done the main loops. History types will appreciate it less than naturalists; there's not much interpretation or narrative here, just woodland being woodland.

Bring waterproofs. The ground gets boggy in wet months, and there's nothing worse than squelching through copse mud in plimsolls. It's free, naturally, and unmanned. A proper local's walk rather than a destination that'll shift your holiday.
