Spa Wood

Spa Wood sits just outside Thame, a proper woodland walk that doesn't require fell boots or an ordinance survey map. The forest floor is soft underfoot, mixed with beech and oak that tower overhead - the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong rather than your own breathing hard.

It's honest woodland, not dramatic. You won't find dramatic vistas or Instagram-worthy clearings, but that's rather the point. Walkers will get a solid hour or two here without feeling like they're trudging in circles. Families with younger kids might stretch it to ninety minutes if you're stopping to turn over logs and spot things. Older children less inclined toward nature won't be gripped by it, but that's fair enough - it's woods, not a theme park.

The access appears unrestricted and free, which is always a bonus. Go in autumn when the light filters through properly, or after rain when the whole place smells right. Spring's decent too if you're into bluebells and that sort of thing.

If you're staying at Lashlake Barn nearby, Spa Wood makes a sensible morning outing before heading into Thame proper or moving on to bigger attractions in the region. It's the sort of place you visit because it's there and local, not because you've planned a pilgrimage. That's exactly what makes it worth twenty minutes in the car.
