Spell Close Wood

A proper woodland walk just a few miles from Northallerton, Spell Close Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy closes in overhead, and there's that satisfying quiet you only get when trees do most of the talking.

It's ideal for a couple of hours if you're staying nearby - say at Whorlton Pods, which sits less than six miles away. Families with young kids will find it manageable enough, though the terrain can be boggy in wet months and there's not much in the way of facilities or marked trails. Walkers after a proper forest ramble will appreciate the natural paths threading through, and anyone wanting to escape Northallerton's town centre for an afternoon will do well here.

The woodland itself is mixed - deciduous trees mostly, patches of bracken, the occasional clearing. Nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. There are no crowds, no café, no visitor centre. You just turn up and walk. Free to access, as far as anyone can tell, and you can spend as little or as long as you like exploring.

Best visited in autumn when the canopy colours properly, or spring when the place feels alive again. Summer can be a bit gloomy under the dense foliage. Bring decent boots - it's genuinely wet underfoot after rain. Worth the detour if you're in North Yorkshire and want something low-key and quiet.
