Spoilbank Plantation

Walk into Spoilbank Plantation and you're stepping into a proper working woodland that actually feels like a working woodland - no manicured paths or gift shop in sight. It's a young plantation by Yorkshire standards, planted on what used to be spoil from mining operations, and the trees have grown tall enough now to create real shade and that lovely forest floor smell.

The main draw here is straightforward: woodland walking. There's enough cover to make it pleasant even when it's drizzly, and it's genuinely quiet if you time it right. The terrain is easy-going, which means families with younger kids can manage an hour or so without complaints, though there's not much in the way of play features or viewpoints to keep them entertained for longer.

It's free to access and open all year, though winter can get muddy and summer weekends tend to bring a fair few locals. Allowing an hour is sensible unless you're a serious botanist type keen to identify everything. The plantation sits about three miles south of Tadcaster, making it an easy add-on if you're based at Wighill Park Glamping nearby.

Is it worth a special journey? Probably not on its own. But if you're spending time in the area and fancy a proper walk without the faffing about, it delivers. The trees are doing what trees do, the air's fresh, and you won't queue for anything. That counts for something.
