Spring Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Ashford, Spring Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon and wonder why you haven't been before. It's a small forest with decent paths threading through - nothing massive, but enough to keep you occupied for a solid couple of hours if you're not rushing. The woodland floor is thick with ferns and moss, especially after rain, and in spring (unsurprisingly) you get a carpet of bluebells that's genuinely worth timing a visit around. Walking through it in May is lovely.

History types won't find much to chew on here - it's just a wood, really - but that's part of its charm. No visitor centre, no faffing about with admission fees or opening times. You rock up, follow the marked paths, breathe some proper fresh air. It's ideal for families with kids who can manage a mile or so on foot without complaining, though it won't hold their attention for hours. Walkers and dog owners get far more from it.

The nearest decent base would be Wheatfields Luxury Glamping four and a bit miles away - if you're staying there, Spring Wood makes for a cracking morning outing before heading into Ashford for lunch. It's the sort of place that slots nicely into a wider Kent break rather than a destination in itself. Early morning visits are best if you want to avoid the dog-walker crowds. Muddy in winter, proper boggy after heavy rain, so autumn and spring are genuinely the sweet spot.
