Springfield Woods

The woodland floor at Springfield Woods is carpeted with bracken and moss, the kind of place where you actually want to slow down. This isn't a manicured forest park with colour-coded trails and visitor centres - it's proper Cumbrian woodland, dense and atmospheric, the sort of place locals walk their dogs without thinking twice.

You get mixed deciduous and coniferous trees creating dappled light even on grey days, which in Cumbria means most days. The trails wind through without drama, making it decent for families with younger kids who aren't quite ready for the fells, but it rewards a proper wander if you've got the time. Bird song echoes through in the quieter sections - you'll clock woodpeckers if you're lucky.

The nearest town is A590, which keeps things accessible without being rammed with visitors. If you're based at Old Park Wood Caravan Holiday Park nearby, this is your on-foot escape route - you can be under the trees within minutes rather than fighting for parking at the obvious spots.

Allow two hours if you're ambling with kids, longer if you want to actually explore rather than circuit-walk. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers, though calling it a spectacular display might be generous. Go early on weekends to dodge the crowds that do trickle through. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and don't expect a café.
