Square Crossey Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination attraction, Square Crossey Wood sits just outside Garstang and offers a decent hour or so among the trees if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks. It's the kind of place where you'll find yourself on well-trodden paths without the crowds you'd get at some of Lancashire's bigger beauty spots.

The wood itself is straightforward - mixed broadleaf forest with enough variety to keep a casual ramble interesting. Bluebells if you time it right in spring, decent shade in summer. It's not dramatic or particularly rare, just a functioning piece of local woodland. You won't find viewpoints or any real facilities, so come prepared for muddy boots and bring your own sense of direction.

Families with younger kids might manage an hour before they're ready for something else. Older children who actually enjoy walking will get more from it. Dog walkers clearly love the place. History types won't find much - it's just a wood, nothing Roman or significant lurking about.

Practically speaking, it's free to access and you can turn up whenever suits. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on which paths you take. If you're staying at Claylands or Gibsons Barn - both within two miles - it's a convenient morning outing. Worth combining with a walk around Garstang itself or heading to somewhere with a bit more structure if you want the day to feel properly packed.

Honestly? It's useful if you're based nearby and need a leg-stretch. Don't drive specially to visit.
