Sròn Mhòr

The walk up Sròn Mhòr rewards you with one of those views that makes the leg-burning climb entirely worth it. From Crieff, it's a proper Highland experience without needing to drive for hours - the peak sits just far enough away to feel like real countryside but close enough for a half-day outing. The ascent isn't gentle. You're looking at a steep push through moorland with decent height gain, but the ridge walk at the top is genuinely excellent, with Loch Earn spread out below and the Trossachs visible on clear days. Allow three to four hours for the round trip if you're moving at a steady pace.

This is one for walkers with some fitness rather than casual strollers. Kids aged ten and upwards will manage it fine if they're used to hills, though younger ones might find the gradient tedious. On a wet day the path gets slippery - proper boots are essential, not trainers. The moorland terrain is open and exposed, so weather changes quickly up there.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Balquhidder Braes is excellent if you can get in there, or Loch Earn Leisure Park puts you practically on the doorstep - Sròn Mhòr fits neatly into a Perthshire walking holiday. The area around Crieff has other decent hills to tackle, so you could easily string together a few different routes across a week. Spring through early autumn is best; winter requires proper winter gear and navigation skills.
