St Andrew's Church, Bramfield

The detached round tower at St Andrew's Church in Bramfield stops you dead. Built sometime in the 11th century, it's one of Suffolk's finest examples of Norman work - solid, circular, and utterly without fanfare. You'll find it a short drive east of Saxmundham, sitting quietly in the village with barely any signage to announce itself.

Inside, the church rewards a proper look. The round tower is the star, but the nave and chancel hold their own too, with enough medieval detail to keep architecture enthusiasts occupied for a good half hour. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, no gift shop, just a genuine piece of 900-year-old engineering.

This works brilliantly as a side stop if you're camping in the area. Haw Wood Farm and Mill Hill Farm are both within spitting distance, making it an easy morning outing before a full day elsewhere. It's not a major draw on its own - you won't need more than 20 minutes unless you're really into church archaeology - but it's exactly the kind of thing that makes a holiday feel more interesting than just the obvious spots.
