St Andrew's Road Pond & Nature Reserve

The pond sits quietly on the edge of St Blazey, a proper local spot that most tourists driving through Cornwall completely miss. It's a small nature reserve built around what used to be clay workings - the kind of place where you might actually see something interesting rather than queuing behind forty other people with cameras.

There's a pond at the centre, ringed with reeds and rough grassland, and if you time it right you'll clock dragonflies, water birds, and the occasional heron if you're patient enough. The walk takes maybe thirty minutes at a leisurely pace. It's free, and there's no faffing about with opening hours or booking - you just turn up. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light's proper and the wildlife's actually moving about.

This works well if you're based at Par Sands or East Crinnis - both within a mile or so - and need a bit of a leg-stretch without the drama of a proper country walk. The kids won't be bored for long, mind you; it's more of a quick detour than a full afternoon activity. Bring binoculars if you've got them. The terrain's flat and muddy after rain, so factor that in. It's the sort of place where you realise Cornwall isn't just beaches and cream teas - there's actual wild space tucked away if you look properly.
