The church sits quietly in Barrow, a few miles south of Chester, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. St Bartholomew's is a proper medieval parish church - the kind with thick stone walls and a tower that's seen about five centuries of Cheshire weather. Inside you get the real deal: ancient stonework, a few decent monuments, and the kind of hushed atmosphere that actually makes you think for a minute.

It's genuinely free to visit, though opening hours can be a bit hit and miss depending on who's got the key that week - this is a working parish church, not a museum. Worth allowing 20 minutes if you're into ecclesiastical architecture or local history; kids will likely get bored within ten unless they're the ruined-things type.

The value here is that it's barely two miles from Northwood Caravan Park and Lloyds Meadow Glamping, making it an easy detour if you're based in one of the Delamere Forest or Ridgeway Country caravan parks. It's compact enough not to eat into a day, but substantial enough that you're not wasting petrol. The walk around the churchyard is pleasant enough, and on a decent afternoon there's something quite restorative about an old church in open countryside.
