St Gabriel's Wood

Ancient oaks tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this lovely stretch of woodland just outside Bridport. St Gabriel's Wood feels properly old - the kind of place where sunlight filters through centuries-old canopies and every fallen log seems to have its own ecosystem thriving underneath.

Walkers will find this a cracking spot for a proper ramble, though don't expect waymarked trails or visitor centres. This is raw Dorset countryside at its best - muddy in winter, gloriously green in summer, and always peaceful. The paths can be a bit rough underfoot, so decent walking boots are essential.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of adventure will love exploring here, but it's not pushchair territory. Dog owners particularly rate this place - plenty of space for four-legged friends to roam, though keep them on leads during nesting season.

Being so close to Golden Cap Holiday Park and the other West Dorset sites makes this an easy escape when you need a break from bucket and spade duties. It's the perfect antidote to busy beach days - just you, the trees, and the sound of birdsong. Allow a couple of hours if you're planning to explore properly, and pack a thermos if the weather's changeable.
