The churchyard at St John the Baptist in Boldre feels properly timeless - ancient yews stand guard over graves that date back centuries, and the church itself sits quietly just south of Brockenhurst in the heart of the New Forest. Walk through the lychgate and you're immediately transported: the medieval flint and stone building commands respect without shouting about it.

Inside, the church rewards close looking. There's genuine history embedded in the stonework and furnishings - the sort of place where you notice details on a second visit that you missed the first time. The chancel is particularly fine. It's free to pop in during daylight hours, and you won't need more than half an hour unless you're seriously into medieval ecclesiastical architecture.

Boldre works well as a gentle detour if you're camping nearby - Roundhill and Hollands Wood are both within a couple of miles, making this an easy morning wander before heading into the forest itself. It's not a destination that'll consume an afternoon, but that's rather the point. Parents with restless kids might find it a bit too quiet and contemplative; historians and anyone who appreciates proper old buildings will rate it highly. The churchyard itself is lovely for a sit-down if you've brought a coffee.
