St John the Baptist, Pebmarsh

The church sits quietly at the heart of Pebmarsh, a village just east of Halstead that most people drive straight through without stopping. St John the Baptist is a proper medieval church - the kind with a tower you can spot from the road and a graveyard that tells you everything about who lived here for the last 500 years.

It's worth a quick visit if you're already in the area, though I wouldn't drag yourself out specially. The interior has some decent medieval features and the usual Essex country church atmosphere - cold stone, high ceilings, and that particular smell of old wood and stone. The churchyard is peaceful, the sort of place where you could sit on a bench for ten minutes and actually think.

This is one for history types and architecture spotters rather than families with restless kids. You'll spend maybe 20 minutes inside, tops, then wander the graveyard for another ten if you're the type who reads inscriptions. If you're staying at Woodchests Glamping or any of the other parks clustered round here - Gosfield Lake Resort and Teybrook Orchard aren't far away either - it makes for a gentle walk from your site.

Access appears free and there's no obvious visitor centre or shop. Just walk in during daylight hours. It's the sort of place that rewards stopping, but only if you're already exploring this corner of Essex. Perfect for a rainy afternoon between other activities, less essential if the weather's decent and you've got countryside to walk instead.
