St John the Evangelist Church

St John the Evangelist Church is a proper medieval affair just outside Oxford - the kind of place where you'll find yourself alone with the stonework and the weight of centuries. It's a working parish church, so you get the real thing rather than a museum experience.

The building itself is what draws you in. Medieval architecture, decent stained glass, the sort of interior that makes you understand why people bothered to build these structures to last. If you're into ecclesiastical history or just fancy somewhere quiet to sit for twenty minutes, it works. The churchyard's worth a wander too.

Not a draw in itself, to be honest. You won't block out a whole afternoon here. But if you're staying at Cedar Hollow or The Oaks - both within three miles - and fancying a gentle walk from the caravan, this ticks the box. It's the kind of thing to do en route to somewhere else in Oxfordshire, or if you're already exploring the local villages.

Families with teenagers interested in architecture will get something from it. Younger kids will find it dull unless they're the contemplative type. Walkers could combine it with rambles through the surrounding countryside.

Check opening hours locally before you go - it's a working church, not a heritage site, so access can be unpredictable. Admission should be free. Twenty minutes maximum, unless you're really into church interiors.
