The churchyard at Salehurst sits quiet and dignified, a proper Sussex village setting that doesn't demand much but rewards a slow wander. St Mary the Virgin is a 13th-century church - brick and sandstone, unremarkable from the road but genuinely moving once you step inside. The interior's got that satisfying medieval feel: low wooden beams, decent stained glass, and the kind of stillness that makes you lower your voice without thinking about it.

It's the sort of place history enthusiasts will appreciate more than most. The church has survived centuries of Sussex winters and agricultural life, and you can read that in the stonework. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no faffing about - just a working parish church that welcomes visitors during daylight hours. Allow twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're lingering over the details. Bring a torch if you're visiting in winter; the interior light is atmospheric but dim.

If you're camping at The Original Hut Company just two miles away - or one of the other excellent sites nearby like Seven Acre Woods or Beech Estate - Salehurst makes an easy morning detour from Robertsbridge. It works perfectly as part of a walking loop through the High Weald, though it's not a destination in itself. No entry fee that I'm aware of, but do check locally as visiting hours aren't always posted online. Worth the visit if you're in the area and enjoy quiet country churches; skip it if you need something more dramatic.
