St Mary the Virgin Church

The church sits quietly in Moor Park, a couple of miles south of Farnham - the sort of place you'd stumble upon rather than specifically travel for, but absolutely worth a brief detour if you're camping nearby. St Mary the Virgin is a proper medieval church, all flint and stone with enough history baked into its walls to keep church enthusiasts happy for an hour or so.

Inside, there's genuine 12th-century work alongside later additions that tell you how the building evolved over centuries. The chancel's the bit that catches most people's eye, and if you're into ecclesiastical architecture, you'll find plenty to study - though it's not the showstopper some Surrey churches manage to be.

The real draw here is the walk. Moor Park itself is lovely countryside, and the churchyard gives onto proper walking country toward the River Wey. Families won't get much out of sitting inside the church itself - kids need space - but older visitors or anyone keen on medieval churches will find it worthwhile. The approach is pleasant enough, especially in autumn when the trees are turning.

It's free to visit, naturally, and you can usually get in during daylight hours without faffing about with opening times. Allow twenty minutes unless you're really into the details. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots around Tilford or Long Acres, it's an easy morning wander before breakfast - adds a bit of local flavour to what might otherwise be a straightforward park holiday.
