St Mary's Church

The church sits on a rise above Aylesford, its stone tower visible from the surrounding fields long before you reach the door. St Mary's is the sort of place that rewards a quiet half-hour on a weekday afternoon rather than a rushed Sunday visit.

Inside, the proportions are proper medieval - a single nave with a chancel that draws your eye eastward, and enough Tudor and earlier stonework to keep architecture enthusiasts occupied. The windows aren't showy, but they let in good light across the nave. There's genuine calm in here, the kind you don't get in the tourist-heavy cathedrals.

It's genuinely worth a detour if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Kits Coty Glamping and Thriftwood Country Park are minutes away. The walk from Aylesford itself takes maybe twenty minutes across flat terrain, which makes this a decent gentle outing for families not keen on anything too strenuous. The churchyard offers views back towards the town and the Medway valley.

Free to enter, no set hours to worry about unless there's a service on. Go mid-week if possible - weekends can draw coach parties. Allow thirty to forty minutes if you're genuinely interested in the architecture, rather less if you're just popping in between camping activities. The real appeal is the lack of fuss. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no laminated information boards. Just a working parish church that's been here since the Normans got building.
