St Mary's Church, Stamford

Walk down Stamford's high street and you'll spot the honey-coloured stone tower of St Mary's rising above the Georgian rooflines - it's what draws your eye first in this ridiculously photogenic market town. The church itself is proper impressive, all medieval bones with later additions that somehow work together rather than fight. Inside, the light falls through the windows in a way that makes you understand why people bothered building these places in the first place.

It's free to wander in, though opening hours can be a bit hit-and-miss depending on who's around - that's the reality of village churches. You'll want to allow twenty minutes to half an hour, longer if you're into the architectural details and have time to read the memorial tablets. History enthusiasts and photographers will get the most from it; kids might manage ten minutes before restlessness sets in.

Stamford itself is worth a proper explore - the whole town is essentially an open-air museum of Georgian architecture, which explains why it doubles as a film set so often. St Mary's fits perfectly into a day wandering the streets, popping into the independent shops, and grabbing lunch. Even from The Nest Glamping or Rockingham Forest Park further out, it's an easy drive in. The church doesn't demand much time, but the town absolutely rewards it.
