St Newlyn East Pit

An old china clay pit turned nature reserve - that's the unlikely draw of St Newlyn East. Once worked for the white stuff that built Cornwall's industrial reputation, this flooded quarry is now a proper haven for dragonflies, newts and the occasional heron if you're lucky with timing.

You'll find yourself on woodland paths circling the water, with benches dotted about if you want to sit and actually watch something happen rather than just walk past it. The reflection of trees in the pit water is genuinely lovely on a still day, and there's a real sense of nature reclaiming what industry left behind. It's quiet - the kind of place where you notice birdsong.

This isn't a destination that'll keep anyone entertained for hours, mind. An afternoon ramble, maybe forty minutes to an hour if you dawdle and do a proper circuit. Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers will get the most from it; kids might lose interest unless they're the type who enjoy spotting dragonflies without complaint. It works best as an add-on to a holiday rather than a reason to book one.

Free to visit, which helps. If you're based at Sunhaven or Trevornick just down the road, or further afield at Parkdean Resorts Crantock Beach, it's worth a morning excursion. Go midweek in summer for the quietest experience, and bring binoculars if you've got them. The reserve is proper rewarding if you give it time.
