St. Nicholas Chapel

Perched on the clifftops above Ilfracombe's harbour, this tiny 14th-century chapel manages to pack more atmosphere into its modest stone walls than churches ten times its size. St. Nicholas Chapel sits like a weathered sentinel on Lantern Hill, visible from miles out at sea - which was rather the point back when sailors needed all the divine help they could get navigating these treacherous North Devon waters.

The walk up from Ilfracombe town centre is fairly steep but well worth the effort. Inside, the chapel is beautifully simple, with ancient stone walls and stained glass that catches the coastal light perfectly. What really makes this place special though is stepping outside onto the surrounding clifftop - the views across the Bristol Channel towards Wales are absolutely cracking on a clear day.

History buffs will appreciate that this is one of the oldest buildings in Ilfracombe, while photographers will find plenty to work with both inside and out. Families might find it a bit limited after twenty minutes or so, but it works brilliantly as part of a longer coastal walk.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Ilfracombe like Hele Valley or those further out towards Woolacombe, it's an easy drive into town followed by that rewarding climb up the hill.
